ConservAmerica Applauds Signing of The Great American Outdoors Act

WASHINGTON, DC – ConservAmerica today welcomes President Donald Trump’s signing of the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) into law.

This historic law strengthens the $887 billion outdoor recreation economy by permanently funding the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and addressing the nearly $20 billion maintenance backlog at our national parks and other federal lands. The newly signed law will add an estimated 100,000 outdoor recreation jobs to America’s economy — a sector that already employs 7.6 million Americans.

Senate Passes Great American Outdoors Act

WASHINGTON, DC — ConservAmerica President Jeff Kupfer applauded the Senate for passing the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act with two-thirds of the chamber voting for the landmark conservation bill.

The bill fully and permanently funds the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), as well as addresses the nearly $20 billion maintenance backlog at our national parks and on other federal lands. The Great American Outdoors Act was introduced in March by Sens. Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Joe Manchin (D-WV), and has the support of more than 800 conservation groups, including ConservAmerica.

After Winning Procedural Vote, the Great American Outdoors Act Continues to Gain Momentum

The U.S. Senate debated the Great American Outdoors Act yesterday afternoon, and by the early evening, ended up voting to invoke cloture by a count of 80-17. This last procedural hurdle means that senators can vote to pass the bill as early as Thursday.

This legislation would be a landmark achievement for conservation, and the goal line is now in sight. With a final vote imminent, you must contact your senators as soon as possible to urge them to support this legislation.

House Introduces Great American Outdoors Act

“ConservAmerica welcomes the introduction of the House companion of the Great American Outdoors Act. This legislation provides badly needed resources to preserve natural habitats and open spaces as well as address the $20 billion backlog in deferred maintenance that is plaguing our national parks and public lands,” said Jeff Kupfer, president of ConservAmerica. “And it’s even more important to get this done quickly as Americans deal with the impacts of the pandemic.”

Webinar: The Great American Outdoors Act

On May 21, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate would take up the Great American Outdoors Act (S.3422) when it returns in June. This legislation, which has strong bipartisan support of 56 Senators, would provide funding to address deferred maintenance at our National Parks and permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Great American Outdoors Act Could Arrive Just in Time to Help America Recover

The current health crisis surrounding the nation and the world is, among many other things, a stark reminder of both the power of Mother Nature and the fragility of life. We are defined by our relationship with our environment, which is why character and tradition are so important. We must cherish our parks and protect our forest and wildlife areas.

When life gets back to normal, these national treasures will be an essential part of the recovery process for millions of Americans. It is therefore very reassuring to hear that when the U.S. Senate returns in April, one of its priorities will be the Great American Outdoors Act (S. 3422).
