ConservAmerica Welcomes the Introduction of The Growing Climate Solutions Act

WASHINGTON, DC β€” ConservAmerica today applauded the introduction of bipartisan legislation aimed at improving the efficiency and transparency of carbon credit markets for farmers and other land managers to encourage market-based approaches to addressing climate change.

The Growing Climate Solutions Act is the result of the combined efforts of Sens. Mike Braun (R-IN), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI). The legislation would create a certification program at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to help remove technical entry barriers to agricultural and forestry sector participation in carbon credit markets.

These issues β€” including access to reliable information about markets and qualified technical assistance providers and credit protocol verifiers β€”  have limited both landowner participation and the adoption of practices to help reduce the costs of developing carbon credits.

β€œThis legislation is an important step in encouraging farmer and forest landowner participation in carbon markets. Having the USDA enhance the legitimacy and transparency of carbon credits will improve the marketplace and allow landowners to contribute to efforts to address climate change in the most economically efficient way,” said ConservAmerica President Jeff Kupfer.
